What are they?
PIR (Passive Infrared) sensors are passive devices that use infrared to detect moving objects without emitting energy. They work by detecting changes in temperature from a “standard” value caused by people or objects entering the monitored area.
How do they work?
PIR sensors feature pyroelectric materials that generate electrical energy when exposed to the heat of infrared radiation. Each PIR sensor is made up of two slots, both made of pyroelectric material, each with an infrared electrode. Under normal conditions, both slits receive the same amount of infrared radiation. When there is a change, one of the slits receives more radiation than the other, generating the first output signal. If the moving object or person continues to move, the other slit is also “altered”, generating a second signal.
What are the advantages?
PIR sensors offer numerous advantages, including compact size, low cost and low energy consumption. They are highly performing and require little maintenance. Furthermore, they can be easily integrated with various video surveillance systems, alarms and smart video intercoms.
